Overview
Far and away the largest city in Hawaii, Honolulu houses 80 percent of the state’s population and is the main point of entry for people arriving in Hawaii. Close to a million people call the metro area home, and there’s no shortage of things to see and do in this bustling city, whose name means 'sheltered bay' in the Hawaiian language. Waikiki Beach is a popular area of town and home to many large hotels, a busy beachfront and fabulous views of Diamond Head as a backdrop. You’ll also find Pearl Harbor, the site of the famed 1941 attack by the Japanese that drew America into the Second World War, on the western side of the city, and famed snorkel beach Hanauma Bay to the east. Many tours of Oahu depart from here, and the city has all the amenities of a busy metropolis, including fine dining, public parks, nightlife, a popular zoo, shopping and even an ice-skating rink. Further proof that this is a magical place? Every Friday, the sky above Honolulu is lit up by fireworks.
Top Activities
Pearl Harbor: There are lots of popular tours and activities available in Honolulu, but the number one attraction on the island of Oahu (and in the entire state) is Pearl Harbor. There are several points of interest in the Harbor, including the USS Arizona memorial, the USS Missouri memorial, the USS Bowfin, the Pacific Aviation Museum and more. We have several different tours available that stop at some (or all) of these attractions. Booking in advance is recommended, as there are a limited number of trips out to the Arizona Memorial per day, and the boats often fill up by mid-morning. Diving and Snorkelling: With Hanauma Bay in its backyard and an abundance of boat dive sites just moments from the shore, Honolulu is a great spot to learn how to dive or snorkel. Both the visitor center, which contains artifacts and footage of the Pearl Harbor attack, and the memorial itself, which sits above the ship’s resting place at the bottom of the harbor, are free, but there are limited numbers of launches that take you out to the memorial. Booking a tour is a great way to guarantee you will get to visit the memorial. Punchbowl National Cemetery is also free and open to the public. There are many free gardens on the island of Oahu. One of the most popular is the 60-acre Koko Crater Botanical Garden, located about 20 minutes east of Waikiki. It takes about an hour and a half to wander its grounds, and it is open from sunrise to sunset daily, except on Christmas Day and New Years’ Day. If you’re into markets, the weekly Ala Moana Farmers’ Market, located at Piikoi and Ala Moana Boulevard, runs every Saturday from 9am to 1pm and features fresh fruit, veggies and other edible faire from the island. A local non-profit artist collective, the Zoo Fence Artists, display their works along the Honolulu Zoo fence every Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 4pm. Every Friday night, the Hilton Hawaiian Village has a free fireworks show at Waikiki Beach. It starts around 7:45pm and can be seen from anywhere in Waikiki.
